The Karoo encapsulates much of what is unique to South Africa. Bushveld and savannah can been seen elsewhere in Africa but only the Karoo offers the combination of geology, geography, history and lifestyle that is unique.
The Karoo has a certain beauty, full of wildlife and above all the hospitality of its people. Night skies are unpolluted by streetlights, and the air is still fresh and clean.
We stayed at a historic Karoo sheep farm, called Weltevreden. The farm is tucked away in the folds of the Sneeuberg Mountains, close to the village of Nieu-Bethesda. The farm also have an intact water mill used to grind wheat in years gone by, standing on the same site as 150 years ago.
If you want to take a break from city life and recharge your ‘batteries’, then the Karoo is definitely the place to go.
